YNW Melly & 9lokknine’s “223’s” Explained | Song Stories

TIA: Almost a year after its release, we finally
have a music video for Glokknine and YNW Melly’s viral collab, “223’s.” TIA: The track was produced by Rocco and originally
dropped back in 2018 on Glokknine’s mixtape ‘Lil Glokk That Stole Khristmas.’ TIA: In August of the following year, “223’s”
was reportedly rebranded to more prominently feature YNW Melly and was re-released on bigger
streaming services. TIA: Thanks to that re-release along with
the help of some TikTok memes, “223’s” saw a massive spike in popularity. TIA: In September, “223’s” peaked at
#38 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, giving Glokknine his first placement on the chart
and YNW Melly another alongside his hit, “Murder On My Mind.” TIA: Back on “223s,” its messaging is
pretty straightforward. As the title suggests, the whole thing is
just about guns. TIA: And on his verse, Melly makes his own
boastful quips. TIA: A lot has happened for Melly since “223s”
first dropped last year. In February, Melly turned himself in and was
arrested for his alleged involvement in the 2019 murder of two friends, YNW Sakchaser
and Juvy. TIA: A while back, Genius spoke to Melly’s
lawyer, Jason Roger Williams, who explained that while Melly has yet to go to trial, his
lyrics could still be used against him. WILLIAMS: Law enforcement are trying to use
this imagery and this music to really bolster and make a case against this young man. There’s been a criminalization of this artform
that goes well beyond what you see in any other genres of music. TIA: It’s currently unclear how Melly’s
lyrics, whether in general or on specific songs like “Murder On My Mind,” which
came out *before* the night of the alleged murder, might affect his upcoming trial. TIA: “223’s” isn’t the first time Melly
and Glokknine have linked up on a track. Back in 2018, the pair came together along
with the late YNW Sakchaser on “Twin #3.” TIA: The video for the track, directed by
frequent collaborator, DrewFilmedIt dropped in early November, and while it doesn’t
include Melly in the flesh, he does have a directing credit and can be heard on the phone
at the very end. MELLY: A white soccer mom and shit like that, kids, you know what I’m sayin? DREW: So basically just a white suburban family like me. TIA: The seven minute long cut also features
a cameo from Melly’s little brother YNW B. Slime as well as Glokknine trying to have
a good time with a slightly dysfunctional family and a bunch of kids doing the same
dance that went viral on TikTok. TIA: Since the video’s release, it’s racked
up well over 3 million views, and seems poised to stay hot for a while to come. TIA: If you wanna learn more about “223’s,”

the meaning and the knowledge behind the music.
