Overview: Song of Songs

The Song of Songs: it’s a well known but not so well understood book of the Bible It’s 8 chapters of love poetry And while there is an introduction, and a conclusion, the book doesn’t have any kind of rigid literary design And that’s because it’s a collection of poems. They’re not meant to be dissected, or taken apart. They’re meant to be read as a flowing whole and simply enjoyed. The first line of the book tells us that it’s “the Song of Songs,” which is a Hebrew idiom like, “the Holy of Holies” or “the King of Kings,” it’s a Hebrew way of saying, “the greatest thing”! So this is the greatest song of all songs. Then we’re told in the first line that this “Song of Songs” is of Solomon – – which could mean that he’s the author, his name does begin the book after all. But as you read the poems, you discover that the main voice is that of a woman, called “the Beloved.” And while there is also a male voice, it does not seem to be Solomon. Solomon is mentioned a couple times in the poem, but he’s never a speaker, and you do have to admit Solomon is a very odd candidate as the author of this book, given the fact that he had seven hundred wives… For the lovers in the Song of Songs, they are the only ones in the world for each other. So the “of Solomon” likely means “in the wisdom tradition of Solomon.” He was known for his wisdom, his poetry, his love of learning about every part of life. And Solomon became the father of Wisdom Literature in Israel. And so his legacy is here carried on, through a collection of love poems that explore the human experience of love and sexual desire. The opening poem introduces us to the basic theme of this book: we hear the voice of the young woman, who delights in her man, a shepherd. Now she’s not married to him yet, but it becomes clear that they’re engaged and they cannot wait to be together. From the introduction, the poems flow back and forth from the woman’s voice, to the man’s, shifting from scene to scene without any kind of clear, linear sequence or storyline. The poems move in the symphonic cycles and key images and ideas get repeated and developed So, one of the basic themes uniting the poems is the intense desire this couple has for each other, expressed through their constant seeking and finding. So, after the opening poem, they’re separated, but on the hunt for one another. So the woman calls out, or she’ll wake up from a dream and go looking for her lover, and more than once they’ll find each other, they’ll embrace. And then right when things start to get a bit racy, the scene will suddenly end. And the new one will start: they’re separated, looking for each other, and on it goes. Another repeated theme is the joy of the couple’s physical attraction for one another. Multiple times they’ll pause and describe each other with these elaborate metaphors, and here it’s very helpful to know that these images and metaphors in Hebrew poetry are not primarily visual. If you try and paint a picture of these people, based on the metaphors you will end up with something that looks very, very strange. What you’re supposed to do, is reflect on the meaning of these images, as they relate to the man and the woman. So you’ll read through the poetic cycle, and the tension will keep building and their desire and joy and attraction, and this spiraling repetition is a poetic way of heightening and focusing on the mystery and power of sexual love. It all comes together in the conclusion, which pauses to summarize what these poems are all about. Love is as strong as death, its passions are as severe as the grave, its flashes are of fire, a divine flame. Many waters cannot extinguish love, rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of ones house for love, he would be utterly scorned. The poem highlights the power and intensity of love – how it’s both beautiful, but also dangerous. Like fire, love can destroy people if it’s abused, or be life-giving if it’s protected. Ultimately love expresses the insatiable human longing to know and be fully known and desired by another. Love is one of the most transcendent and mysterious experiences in human life, and as part of the Bible’s wisdom tradition, this book says it’s a gift from God. After this, there’s an odd poem about Solomon trying to do what the previous poem just said was impossible: to buy love. The woman rejects Solomon’s offer and then the book concludes with the man and the woman – they’re separate once more on the hunt for each other. He calls to hear her voice, she begs him to run away with her, and that’s how the book ends. Just totally open-ended. But that’s a lot like love! Which never truly concludes, because there’s always more to discover and pursue in your beloved. And so true love has no end. And neither does this book. Now, through history, the big question raised by the Song of Songs is, “what on earth is love poetry doing in the Bible?” There have been three main interpretations of this book throughout history. In Jewish tradition, it’s been read as an allegory: each character a symbol. So the woman is Israel, the man is God, and their love is the symbol of covenant between God and Israel made at Mount Sinai and the giving of the Torah. This view flowed into the Christian tradition, but the characters were swapped. So it’s about Christ’s love for His people the Church. And this interpretation was inspired by Paul’s words in Ephesians 5: – that a Christian husband’s love for his wife is a symbol of Christ’s love for the Church. What’s interesting is that in the last hundred years, archaeological discoveries among Israel’s ancient neighbors and Egypt and Babylon, has turned up all kinds of ancient love poetry that’s very similar in language and imagery to the Song of Songs. We see that love poetry was a meaningful part of Israel’s cultural environment, which has led most scholars today to view the Song of Songs as what it presents itself to be: an arrangement of Israelite love poetry reflecting on the divine gift of love. But, that doesn’t mean it’s only ancient love poetry. There’s a key feature of these poems that sticks out when you read them as a part of the Old Testament. And that’s the overwhelming use of garden imagery. There are powerful echoes of the garden of Eden and the idyllic scene between the married couple in the early chapters of Genesis. So the image of the man and the woman naked and vulnerable, but completely unified and safe with one another – this resonates in the background of the Song of Songs. It’s as if in these poems, we are witnessing the love of a couple whose relationship is untainted by selfishness and sin. And so ultimately the Song holds out hope that even though our own relationships are so often distorted by selfishness, love is a transcendent gift. And it’s meant to point us to something greater, to the gift of God’s love that will one day permeate and transform His beloved world. And that is what the Song of Songs is all about.

The book isnt to be viewed in such carnal way. It’s the relationship and how Christ has love for his wife, the Church.

God is very precise with His KJV language so if God says the book is from Solomon that Solomon authored it with dictation by God.

My favorite verse from this book is 5:8: "If you find my beloved, tell him that I am sick with love". So beautiful! I first read it in John Bunyan's book "A Pilgrim's Progress".

I must disagree in all love and truth. This book is about Christ himself. It is prophetic in nature. Solomons many wives and the shulamite mirrors the future Covenant involving gentiles. The BRIDE. as Christ relays his coming as to wedding feast. This is one of the best cases of typology foreshadowing of Christ and his relationship with us. the love and adoration of the believer the shulamite and Solomon being the very basis reflecting the love between god and his people. No wise literature of or inspired by Solomon would be skin deep. Please consider republishing this. All the others are phenomenal yet this one take on song of Solomon has missed the key underlying mark which is without question Jesus Christ and his bride the church

i believe passion and love are two different things… for me passion is a flesh desire that has no end,it is like burning in your flesh for someone else,as that versicle says! but love is totally different! This book is amazing bc whilst you read you think a lot about what is love and what is passion… and you can read with more than one interpretation, church and God or husband and wife

Our Heavenly Father (God/creator) and Lord Jesus Christ is watching-who all on
earth (human beings) is walking according to the true word of God's Grace that He
brought 2018 years ago……..and who is the most obedient/submissive (#1)……Our creator is watching who is trying the most to dig/explore the truth from His word/Holy Bible  and trying to live accordingly (it is like hide & seek play-seek the hidden truth about spirit-hidden due to sin)….or have a desire to live accordingly….who is # 1 in seeking Heavenly Kingdom principles/laws (loving, forgiving, compassion-nature of our creator/divine
nature)….who is # 1 in giving thanks to Heavenly Father from the heart/spirit
for His grace in us……… He is watching who all are loving even their enemies, display forgiveness, in this short-life earthly marriage (praying for difficult husbands/wives so that power of Heavenly grace change them-believe in the word of Jesus Christ that they are not enemies, creator joined them, praying for them-starting respect from families- Gospel Matthew 19: 6, etc.)……. Our creator is watching who is # 1 in spreading the fragrance
of divine nature (model Jesus Christ in their life) from their garden/temple/spirit
& producing fruit of the Holy spirit (2 Corinthians 2: 14; Song of Songs 4:
16; Gospel John 15: 2)….reading and meditating day & night from the Bible/word
of heavenly grace & listening from anointed ones, fellowship with other brethren,
learning from experiences, and finally yielding/adjusting their life to the
    Word……..Our creator sees our heart/spirit (1 Samuel 16: 7; etc.)………Our sins are
forgiven in Heavenly grace……..Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one
who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will
love them and show myself to them.” 23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will
obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make
our home with them (Gospel John 14: 21, 23)…. …just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the
word,  and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless (Ephesians 5: 26)……Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon as promised!….those  who live according to His word/washed
themselves with His word will live everlasting life in the new earth/new Jerusalem/promised land where there is no fear, stress, cry, weeping, sufferings, etc., no evil, that we see in our present earth (2 Peter 3; Revelation 21; Isaiah 65; 66; etc.)….those
who don’t obey the Word of Grace/Word of Jesus Christ will go to eternal hell,
where fire, worms, suffering, etc. exists-nobody can help there (Gospel Luke
Gospel Luke 16: 26; Matthew 13: 41; etc.)….In my thinking, Daughter of Zion is
our creator’s most beloved /obedient daughter… She is compared to bride of
    Christ/church of Christ (Matthew 22: 1; 25: 1; Revelation 22: 1; etc. )…..Do
not be afraid, Daughter Zion, your king is coming (Gospel John 12: 15)…. My
Heavenly Father, Your Kingdom come (Matthew 6: 10)….. The Spirit and the bride
(Lord Holy Spirit and the Bride) say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say,
“Come!” (Revelation 22: 17)…….So, one who listen to the Gospel, say-Lord Jesus
    Christ, come soon!….Thank you!

This time I don't agree. The song of songs never was pure love poetry. But it was from its archeological beginnings intended as a hierogamy. The relationship of Jesus and the Church is the intended sense from the beginning. Only in the jewish secularisation that led to the Old Testament, 200 years before Christ, the links to divinities were rooted out, in fear of polytheism.

God utilized and loved the Jewish people and think about how close to Him they were before Christ came down. (I am Not attempting to say God doesn’t care about them anymore. I wonder if there was,
    or if there is.
A greatest lesson in childbirth or being a parent.
I wonder if God gave that to us in the way he did,
for us to learn from it. Regardless of what we did in the garden. but a full cognizance. Maybe for us to know a piece of him, as FATHER GOD CREATOR!
    THE LOVER OF OUR SOUL.
PERSONALLY feel the Lord has shown me, this is him & his CHURCH.
She hungers for HER love & HIS teaching.
JUST TO sit in his SHADE & THAT every word. be sweet to her
    Spirit.
AS HE FIRST BREATHE LIFE INTO MAN & TEACHING HIM.
I haven't met many who feel the same but I do perceive that part of it the songs of Solomon is pattern after his love for us and how he wants us to LOVE HIM in return just as a man & a woman but on a much GREATER PLANE. AS CHRIST & HIS BRIDE.
🤔THINK WHEN ADAM WALKED WITH HIM IN THE GARDEN THAT COMPLETE CONNECTION WITH GOD HE BECAME SO INTELLIGENT FROM HIS ✝️TEACHING.
ADAM NAMED EVERY ANIMALS THINK OF IT. GOD TEACHES a lot with symbols IN the BIBLE. I think this is symbolic of that. TO hunger for him as we do THE AIR that we breathe. CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT.
Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, & that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
That's what the first church had,🤗
THAT'S how people are delivered from drugs and drinking promiscuous behavior & SO ON the whole enchilada.
    TRUTH complete❣️.

ISAIAH 22 – SONG OF SONGS
“But instead, joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

    (Isaiah 22:13)

    WORDS BY: FATHER

"There is a deadly disease in life which causes spot and wrinkle to remain on the Bride. It is comfortability. Comfortability is a killer because you are comfortable with your own death. Being careless and complacent with your life is offensive in My eyes considering I have given you a life. To waste it away is to live how you please in whatever way satisfying. It is a spiritual disease which many are encumbered by. They think of nothing but the moment they’re in despite if that moment will cost them everything later. Spiritually, people do this by compromising the truth without considering the cost afterwards. Compromise always has its cost and if you stop to think about what the cost will cause you, you might just be repulsed by it and think twice before you choose to go down that path. Tomorrow is a fruit of today and if you sow good today then you will reap well tomorrow.

Life is not about making the most of it by living how you please. With this attitude you will die when tomorrow comes. It’s about making the most of it in the life I give. You are indeed the Bride of Christ, and being such you are called to live in spiritual holiness without spot or wrinkle. How can one acquire such a high standard? Live every moment as if I am physically next to you. Would you feel comfortable doing the things you do or would you feel great discomfort? Because your physical eyes don’t see Me, your love will be tested how much you deny yourself to live for Me. Know that I am with you and one day when you stare into the eyes of your Bridegroom, can He look at you and be pleased with the life you’ve accomplished?"

Christ and the church… And it does have rich pictures of that ultimate relationship. And there is no swap because the church is Israel with gentiles grafted in… Also strengthened by Solomons name in the feminine being the woman. Grateful for the videos.

The Song of Songs is a return to Eden. The by-product is to increase our desire for an Edenic sexuality that will only be fully possible in the new heavens and earth. This of course brings up the question of whether there will be physical sexual activity in heaven.

Isn’t the point of the Resurrection and the new creation to restore all that has been corrupted by sin and death? To restore man and woman back to the creation design which received such a postive affirmation from God?

I honestly thought that some of the chapters from the book of Solomon was written by king David because "my son" is mentioned a good bit of times.
    I didn't realize it's a whole love story 🤔
