Max Martin – The Formula Behind Every Hit Song

Max Martin is a super producer when it
comes to music he’s done songs with almost every top artist from Katy Perry
to Chris Daughtry, Nicki Minaj, everyone. And recently I’ve been on a binge of his
songs since I found a Max Martin Spotify playlist and as I’m listening to it I
have been deconstructing the way that he thinks about producing songs and I’m
trying to learn music producing through that. Most of that’s been happening in
the car on long drives and in this video I want to share my insights. Kind of like
a selling breakdown on Max Martin. Keep in mind most of these were posted in an
Instagram story form first so please disregard the fact that it’s
filmed vertically. This is interesting so for great art or for great business or
for anything it really comes down to what are you willing to not have credit
for and it’s the same in movies and it’s the same in business. The company trumps
everything the creation trumps everything. I just listened to the song
swish swish and it’s like a master class in Max Martin producing. The Katy Perry
track is garbage the chorus doesn’t really make any sense
then Nicki Minaj comes in with like three different versions of her verse and saves it basically and that song is what Max
Martin does perfect which has led his artists to be artists. That seems like
the mark of a great producer. Somebody who’s able to frame the artist in such a
way that they shine the best and then add those little flourishes to make it
more accessible or make it better. I’ve listened to a lot of these Max Martin
tracks now and it’s clear that he works best when he has a strong songwriter
somewhere on the team. This is can’t get enough by Becky G. Becky G if you
look that up on Spotify I love this song by Max Martin because
it is clearly the my parents bought me a song starter pack.
You’ve got the cheap verse by the Pitbull knockoff halfway through the
song then the real pitbull comes in. The thing that this highlights is Max Martin
can be bought. According to Ryan Holiday’s book Perennial Seller Max Martin puts
all of his songs through what he calls the Pacific Coast Highway test which
means he speeds down the Pacific Coast Highway and blasts music and makes
sure it feels good there. By the way I love this about music producers so the
super producers let’s say Max Martin Rick Rubin any of those guys they don’t
do albums for their artists they’ll only work on like one song and then they’ll
put everything into that song then the artist just does whatever they want for
the rest of time. If you know somebody that would get immense value from this
video maybe they’re a music producer maybe they’re a musician I would love if you can
send it their way also if you want advice from me and a one-on-one setting
that’s over at experiment 27.com/consult and if you have a business book
and want to turn it into a documentary you can check us out at loreliapictures.com.
I’m Alex Berman, thanks!

So music has gone from producers like George Martin, Phil Spector, Quincy Jones, Mutt Lange to this Max Martin crap. No wonder modern music doesn't exist as art form on the radio anymore. Its just rehash garbage.

I don't know if you've seen them already or would even be interested, but if you want to see a bit of Max Martin producing recent songs, Taylor Swift did 'Making Of A Song' videos for many of the songs on her reputation album, several with Max in them. For instance, 'The Making of a Song: I Did Something Bad': https://youtu.be/WdhRjG60g9E

Pretty sure Rick Rubin produced 5 or 6 of RHCP albums, so he’s not just a singles man

He knows how to work the mainstream pop culture music market, you can hate the artists he works with, you can hate his “repetitive pop formula” but he’s got it down to a T

"It is clear he works best when he has as strong songwriter on the team." Umm, Max Martin has written the third most number one hits behind only Lennon and McCartney. Not produced, written.SAD!

You make a great point at @1:33. I went to law school and had to learn legal writing. I was very strong at creative writing; stronger at argumentative writing. But legal writing was a very different animal. It's so formulaic that I hated it at first, as I felt that it deprived me of my creativity in writing. But it's a formula I had to master and once you do that, it becomes second nature. That's when the formula starts operating behind the scene at a subconscious level and then you can allow the creativity of your legal argument to really start to flow and take shape without the formula getting in the way. But the formula for success will be necessary in most cases…unless and until an artist who is so superior in their craft comes along and not only breaks/smashes all the rules, but creates a new paradigm. And even then, you usually can't get there unless you know the old paradigm well enough to know how to turn it on its head and create a new one. So study up! lol Study he greats. Because as they say, practice makes perfect!
