Elastica – Why Aren’t There More Pop Songs About Bad Sex? [Re-upload]

Salt n Pepa: “Let’s talk about all the good things,
and the bad things that may be” “Let’s talk about sex.” Songs about sex have always been a
cornerstone of pop music, even if they weren’t always as explicit as they are now. Modern classic My Neck My Back
was never going to fly in 1964. They were a lot more subtle, like how Please Please Me is a plea for more blowjobs or how I Can’t Get No Satisfaction was Mick Jagger getting cock-blocked by his girlfriend’s period: Little Richard used gibberish to
disguise his point while Prince, as well as using clothes and car innuendo, straight-up released the PMRC provoking Darling Nikki And that’s just the men. Give a moment for the 80s-era filth of
Cyndi Lauper’s She Bop Madonna’s Like a Virgin
or Push It by Salt n Pepa But these are all about the desire, the act. So what about when the desire is there
but the act falls short? Stutter was 1993 single from Elastica
and as an extreme rarity in pop music it’s about an unfortunate case of
erectile dysfunction from the female point of view Anyone who has been on either side of that situation knows it is Awkard as Fuck. Yet Elastica and especially vocalist
Justine Frischmann find a way to make it sound natural,
even empowering or while never being a joke song. The opening couplet sets up the scene and gives the song its title: Then second outlines the problem: Despite her partner’s current state, the protagonist is more than happy to chalk this up as a singular lapse. In the chorus, she firstly blames herself
believing she is not enough for him: or that her technique is off: before restating her point outwards: And it’s not just the lyrics that expand
on the situation the tempo shows a lot too. It’s not a dirge pace lament to the disastrous end
to night’s activities but more akin to the Buzzcocks two-minute tales of sexual misadventure. This isn’t about him and his insecure self-blame. It’s about her and her building frustration. This is hammered home at the end with the additional: complemented by orgasmic harmonies: This hints that though she’s trying to
remain understanding and patient with her malfunctional lover,
she’d much rather be fucking right now. This song came out amongst Britpop’s wave of male hormones and songs about personal virility and the implication is genius. Blur was singing about doing girls like they’re boys, Oasis were bleeding arrogance and Pulp dripping sleaze: And then Stutter called this all into dispute, making people second-guess their assumed masculinity of these bands by association. What makes the song even more delightfully awkward is that Frischmann was dating
Blur’s Damon Albarn at the time with many believing that the song was about him Songs about shitty sex are a rarity and the image of the pre-grunge rock star
is ruined slightly when admitting to not being a flawless sex deity. You need to have a cast-iron ego
to put yourself down like that. And while some songs about flawed fucking do exist they’re not on the forefront of the band’s catalog. “This next song is about erectile dysfunction.” “Maybe you’ve heard of it?” “Alright, maybe not.” Songs about shitty sex
from a female perspective are even rarer. Basically there’s Stutter
and two songs by Lily Allen: Awkwardness. Frustration. Doubt. Self blame. And assorted intimate sexual details Together provide a shedload of tangible
emotional meat for any shitty-sex-based pop song. It ties into human experience: we know how to deal with heartbreak
thanks to songs about that subject, but how many times have a couple been in a failed attempt at intimacy and thought it was the end of the world. Are they the only this has ever happened to? Comedy songs aside there aren’t many points of reference in pop music to this fact of life. Rare songs like Stutter show that
someone has been there before and as frustrating and embarrassing is it may be,
life goes on. So why aren’t more artists writing about
their sexual missteps? Surely notable not very good sex still happens? Maybe it really is that embarrassing
and the implication is a bit too pointed But c’mon, if Ariana Grande’s next single was a sordid car crash bedroom tale it would be the greatest pop song since ever! But even with punk pop bands like Best Coast, Hinds, Cayetana and Bleached, where are their awkward sex songs? A couple of year’s back New York-based duo Diet Cig had the song Sixteen, a song about having sex
with someone with the same name as you: And it’s a good start for moving forward,
but the world needs more. Pop music helps every generation deal
with life’s little problems. As it is Elastica’s Stutter remains
a cornerstone of 90s Britpop as well as the most accurate dissection
of whiskey dick in pop music. Thanks for watching. Sorry I haven’t released anything new this month. I promise that actual brand new content
is coming soon but I’d like to shout out my amazing top
tier patrons including new supporter LEWIS WEAGER
Thanks and see you soon!

The affair between Justine & Damon lit up 🇬🇧 Pop. How about Ian Curtis , " You cry out in your sleep , all my failings exposed "

Why would bad sex inspire someone to write a song about it? Do people sing about boring grocery lines or a bad day at the park?

Lily Allen was the first thing that came into my head upon reading the title. Also this part of 'the worst guys' by Childish Gambino: "I had a menage, and murdered the vag'
    – But, afterwards, it was awkward as fuck Cause I'm nervous as fuck and could not get it up. I-I-I-I-I need a minute, cold water to the face, I-I-I couldn't finish, got the uber from her place". Also, Eddies Gun by The Kooks

Another great vid, praise be to the YT algorithm that led me here! Highlight of the 90s for me was watching Elastica at Glastonbury (I think it was Glasto, memory hazy …). I guess Stutter was one that Damon didn’t help write. 😉

Justine is the woman I always dreamt to be (sans the marrying part), Elastica remains one of my favourite bands and 'Stutter' is IMO their best song. A severely underrated anthem (well, Elastica as a whole is underrated), a 2 minute playful, witty, straight-to-the-point constructive criticism. You can't help but wish they'd stuck around for longer, hoping they would release a better third album, but I guess that just like their songs, which were good BECAUSE of their briefness, Elastica's time was also meant to be brief. Their music wakes you up, makes you roll your eyes slightly and chuckle, and just when you are pumped up and decide to "do something", the song ends, leaving you craving more.

There was one classic about bad sex (among other things) from the 90s that even got a video. Remember "What's my Age Again?" from Blink 182?

I took her out, it was a Friday night
I wore cologne to get the feeling right
We started making out and she took off my pants
But then I turned on the TV
And that's about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when you're twenty three
And I'm still more amused by TV shows
    What the hell is A.D.D.?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again, what's my age again?
Then later on, on the drive home
I called her mom from a pay phone
I said I was the cops
    And your husband's in jail
The state looks down on sodomy
And that's about the time that bitch hung up on me
Nobody likes you when you're twenty three
And I'm still more amused by prank phone calls
What the hell is call ID?
My friends say I should act my age
    What's my…

Together Pangea has a slew of songs about bad sex, 2 drunk 2 cum, and sick shit's main verse is "my dick is soft". Its relief to hear something that touches on the awkward moments of intimacy that we've all have experienced.

This whole series is just amazingly well done, especially considering it seems to be truly amateur, as in, not done by a team of trained professionals. The writing, editing, and narration are all absolutely top notch!
