21 Savage’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ Inspired “Immortal” Explained | Song Stories

TIA: On October 31st, 21 Savage hit fans with
the long-awaited new release of “Immortal” while they wait for his next project. TIA: The track was produced by frequent collaborator
Kid Hazel, who’s also responsible for production on a number of the tracks from 21 Savage’s
most recent studio album, ‘i am greater than i was.’ “Immortal” first dropped as part of the
official announcement trailer for ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ back in December 2018. TIA: Almost a year later, the official version
is out, and ‘Mortal Kombat’ references are peppered all over the track. TIA: 21 namedrops a bunch of characters from
the game including Liu Kang alongside a luxury car. TIA: This isn’t the first time 21’s mentioned
Liu Kang in lyrics, he also drops the fighter into a verse on 2015’s “Woah” off ‘The
Slaughter Tape.’ TIA: Back on “Immortal,” he also mentions
the ninja Scorpion. TIA: Thanks to some clever wordplay, 21 drops
in a reference to his iced out jewelry alongside the assassin Sub-Zero. TIA: He also drops two into one verse, referencing
both the cyborg Cyrax and the soldier Jax. TIA: As well as a shout out to Princess Kitana. TIA: And 21 Savage references the infamous
“finish him” sound effect from the game. TIA: ‘Mortal Kombat’ references in hip-hop
are pretty common. We’ve heard the game dropped in plenty of
other songs, like at the beginning of Ski Mask The Slump God & Juice WRLD’s cut “Nuketown.” TIA: Back on the track, 21 Savage throws it
back with a lyrical reference to the chorus of his J. Cole assisted hit “a lot.” TIA: 21 managed to throw in a sports reference
too, shouting out Houston Rockets point guard Russell Westbrook, who at the time the song
was first previewed played for the Oklahoma City Thunder. TIA: Even though “Immortal” dropped at
the end of October, besides being previewed in the Mortal Kombat trailer, back in August,
21 Savage teased the release on Twitter saying quote: TIA: It got a lot of retweets but the track still dropped two months later. Since its release “Immortal” is climbing
up the Genius song chart, and fans of the game and the rapper are happy to finally have
the song out. TIA: If you wanna learn more about “Immortal,”

meaning and the knowledge behind the music.

Good god these lyrics are the fucking worst.

They aren't even clever he just randomly grabs character names that have anything to do with what he is saying.
